Changes are coming to our Highly Capable Program. A new law in Washington State requires that all school districts identify their "most highly capable" students and provide a continuum of services to those students in Kindergarten through 12th grade beginning next school year (2014-2015). The new law also includes specific language for districts around identifying their "most highly capable" students. Currently, the district provides a continuum of programs for highly capable students in grades 3 through 12. The law requires us to expand our services to include K-2nd grades.
The Lakewood School District is now accepting nominations for students in grades K-4th grade to be tested for the Elementary Highly Capable Program. Any parent, teacher or community member can refer a student for testing. Some of the traits to look for in a child who may qualify are: excellence in one or more academic areas (ex. MAP scores in the 90th % +range), high level of cognitive ability, exceptional creativity and comprehension. Nomination forms are available on the district website at: http://www.lwsd.wednet.edu/Page/168 or by calling the district office at 360-652-4500.
